High School in America Program

The High School In America will let you:
  • Attend public/private high school on the J1 Exchange Visitor visa
  • Become a member of your host family, joining activities, meals and every-day life
  • Find a host family  somewhere in the continental United States
  • You must be healthy and above average maturity  
  • You must have openness and flexibility to embrace all that is new

The Department of State implemented a toll free number (1-866-283-9090) for High School in America students. The toll free number can be used by host families, exchange students and the public to report circumstances impacting the students’ health, safety and well-being during their experience in the United States.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old do I need to be?​
Program participants need to be 15 to 18.5 years old, and enrolled in high school in your home country.
What level of English do I need?
You need to have basic practical skills in both spoken and written English and have completed at least three years of English instruction.
Do I need to have good grades?​
Students must not have  failed a year of school or an English language course in the past three years and meet a minimum grade requirement.
Why should I choose the Pan Atlantic Foundation   program?​
Simply put, we are the best. We select participants carefully. Our Area Representatives are well trained, and the expertise of our staff spans more than 25 years.
How does the program support me throughout the year?​
Area Representatives live near you and are always there for you. They are available throughout  the program year for advice and support. In addition, the Pan Atlantic Foundation   office in Portland Maine has a  toll-free line available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
What are a host family's qualifications?​
Pan Atlantic Foundation   Host families are carefully interviewed and screened.  But, equally important, Host Families have open hearts and look forward to opening their home and welcoming you as a part of their family.

You will benefit by immersing yourself in another culture, discovering a new perspective on the world around you, and make life long connections and friends.
